Back to my thoughts

The past week has been a little hectic with finals and papers. But alas, I am back at my blog, back at my thoughts. I just wanted to share something that I experienced last Thursday after I got off work. I've been wanting to put it down on "paper" for a while and now I finally have the time!

In one of the spiritual discernment class we talked about our gifts vs. our skills. What is the difference between a gift and a skill. The discussion led to us talking about what gives us joy in life. At the time, the only thing I could think of was music. I've always loved music. I especially love to sing. That's no surprise to me, I had always known that. But I wondered if that was the only thing...

Last Thursday,I worked my weekly shift at the Kitty shop. It was a little chilly, and a bit cloudy. But the sun had started to shine through the thin sheet of clouds in the early evening. I was wearing an especially favoured outift that day - a pair of grey pants and a simple white shirt that day, topped with a light beige jacket. After I got off work, I decided to head to the grocery store next door to pick up some fruits and vegetables for dinner. I'm not sure if it was the weather, or the outfit that I felt so good in, but when I was picking out oranges I felt a deep sense of joy, and peace. I so very much loved that moment, fresh air in my lungs and colourful produce around me. I was in heaven. I felt very much like a woman, and very grateful that I actually had to chance to be shopping for vegetables. I thought, this is what I find deep in joy in (as well). I topped off the evening by purchasing a loaf of bread at the local bakery. Walking home in the sun with a bag of groceries and feeling beautiful in my clothes, I thought then about how much I was like my mother, who is an excellent home-maker and enjoys the finer things in my life. I thought about how all those years I tried to be as strong and "intelligent" as a man by studying engineering, as if I was trying to prove something. But in the end, I could never suppress the innate soul of a woman inside my heart. I realized that being a home maker was not any less than being a a doctor, a lawyer, accountant..etc. God uses us in a ways that glorify the gifts that he has blessed us with. Somebody's gotta be the mother, the one who stays home with the kids, the one who cooks and cleans. And if I had to give up my career to this stuff, I would gladly do so, knowing it would not a "waste" of my education, or years of work experience, but just another way of how God calls me to give myself to others in other ways.

I find deep joy in shopping for vegetables ;o) I had never felt so feminine.
