The "to do" list

Haven't blogged in a while. I've been trying to go to bed earlier these days. In the past I've always blogged late into the night, but I started to notice some obvious negative health effects in going to bed at 3am. So, I'm trying to adjust things a little bit. I really want to keep up my daily blogging still, perhaps I need to make better use of my time so I can start blogging at an earlier hour. And tonight I have a bit of time before bed, so I thought I would share some thoughts that have been on my mind over the past few days...

I noticed that a friend of mine had posted a list of a bunch of thing he would like to accomplish in his life time on his fb page. He had a long list, full of exciting and exotic things, some I can only dream (or would never dare) to do. Reading his list made me think about the times I've come up with a list of things to accomplish in this life time (or, before I turn 30, as I remember distinctly). Re-thinking that "list", I can see how God has really changed my life. I feel that now if I can discern what it is that God wants me to do with my life, and fully live my life for God's purpose, then I am completely satisfied. I used to feel envious of others' lives when I heard of traveling stories - of exotic places visited and extravagant parties attended. Of experiences far from my reach. My best friend is in studying abroad and has spent the last 6 months in Europe with her brand new Swedish beau. My other best friend is in California studying for her MBA, basking in the sun - her photos show her sun-kissed and making bundles of new friends.

I'm in Vancouver, studying for my Master's, having canceled some plans to go traveling for the year. Instead I am back to living on my own (now with a wonderful roommate) with my two cats. Life didn't take the turn towards "exciting adventures in Mexico and South America for 6 months" Instead, I have found myself back in Vancouver, yet living a brand new life, one that I have never quite experienced before. I really feel that God is calling me to be here in this place at the moment. I'm learning more about him and growing closer to him each day. I'm here to focus on not only my schooling, but also (perhaps foremost, as it should always be) on God. And that, I feel I cannot do if I was elsewhere.

I must admit I find myself surprised to be content. That underneath the seemingly mundane and comfortable life that I lead in Vancouver, lies the excitement of God's plans for me to take this time to grow in faith. I'm so thankful of the people that he's brought into my life - especially my roommate, who has helped me immensely in discovering God more. I still want to travel the world, but there is no burning desire, there is no rush to do all those things that I had wanted to get done asap. The world is a big and beautiful place that God created. I suppose one could never see enough of the world to satisfy the thirst to experience more adventure. I do know that I am completely happy to be in God's guidance and care, and if it's in his plans that I get to visit the Pyramids someday, then it will happen. I guess what I'm trying to say is, my trust in the LORD and all his plans for me has ceased the feeling inside that I'm somehow "missing out" on life if I'm not doing all the things that others seem to be doing. As Flora Wuellner so gracefully puts it "We are not asked to choose a good life, but to choose our life. (and "We are not asked to just find a worthily appropriate job, but to find our job").

Thanks to be God that he has been faithful to me and thus guided me this far. I want nothing more than to do his will, and to to give my life to serving him ;o) For what good is something if it's not used for something it wasn't created for? And what good is someone who doesn't care about anyone else but him/herself? You spend your life working to achieve, to be recognized and to gain. But what good is all that? It will all pass away one day. If you haven't left a mark of kindness in this world, what good at all is your existence?

Just for fun, here's my new want "to do" list, dearest and closest to my heart...

1. Take my mom to Italy/France, to classical concerts, operas, and afternoon teas!
2. Marry the man that I love, who loves God, and who loves me for exactly who I am
3. Be a mother
4. Have the capacity to love others like Christ has loved us
5. Adopt a puppy
6. Continue to sing and play music for the rest of my life
7. Move into a house with a nice yard

Hmm... that's it for now..... ;o)
