Today was another beautiful day, albeit a little chilly. I went to the beach and dinner with two dear old friends from high school. In our conversation, I found out that one was now "semi-dating" a girl who showed a lot of interest in him. This friend is one of the nicest, most sincere guy I know and I was surprised to know of his lukewarm feelings for her despite them having hung out a couple of times. What was he doing hanging out with her if he's not going to pursue her with all his heart, like any woman should be, by a man who shows a genuine interest in wanting to know her better, with no hidden agendas, and not as a convenient cover for that loneliness inside your heart you desperately want to fill.
We are mysterious creatures (a line from one of my favourite movies called Evening). Human relationships with each other are often more mysterious. I was thinking tonight of past relationships, and how I seem to have changed over the years. In the past, I was living in a fast paced world. It seemed that I could jump from one relationship to another within the blink of an eye. Now that I'm a little older (perhaps wiser due to God's grace) I realize that I need to take time to let everything heal. I do believe that our God isn't one who likes the avoidance of pain. The pain of losing someone completely (as if they've fallen into a deep abyss out of your life), especially someone you were close to, takes time to heal, no matter what the circumstances are. I cannot make myself forget, or stop caring. I do not want my heart to turn to stone. I can only pray. The LORD is the one who will bring about healing, and gently nudge you to let you know that the time has come for you to be in another relationship again. But, we must remember also to pray to God to guard our hearts. No, he doesn't want you to just give it all away fast. He wants to keep you safe, to keep you from harm.
I feel like I've gone off on a tangent from talking about my good old friend. What I realized from talking to him is that if he, who I consider such a sweet and nice guy, can potentially cause a poor girl so much heartache (for women often associate physical closensss with their emotion more than men), then what about our friendship? Anyone can be nice and sweet to the people they love or like. But anyone is prone to sin, and prone to hurting others through selfishenss. That's why I think we need God, for he sets the moral standards for us, he teaches us how to love people the way he intended for them to be loved. In a relationship, people change. God never changes. That is why I have come to realized how extremely important it is to have God in their relationship, and for each to have a good relationship with God.
The mystery between people is too great for us to fathom. What are is only human. But as we have been made in the image of God, he has programmed in us complexities that only himself understands. And that's why it is only through God that we can truly know ourselves, and learn to love each other as they are.
